Teeth whitening

Whitening aims to lighten the shade of natural teeth. Whitening toothpastes and mouthwashes remove some of the surface stains; only a whitening agent reaches the deeper pigments behind the change in colour. Results and duration vary from person to person, and an examination beforehand helps set realistic expectations.

Why teeth change colour

Tooth discolouration is classified as extrinsic or intrinsic. Extrinsic stains appear on the surface of the tooth, on the enamel. Intrinsic stains sit between the enamel prisms and are anchored more deeply, in the dentin, the layer beneath the enamel.

Whitening toothpastes and mouthwashes can remove some extrinsic stains. Only a whitening agent reaches the intrinsic pigments that cause the change in colour.

What to know beforehand

Results and treatment time vary from person to person, depending on the starting colour and the desired result. Crowns, bridges and veneers cannot be whitened.

A prior visit is required: any whitening treatment must be preceded by a complete dental exam and a cleaning. It is that assessment which determines the option suited to your situation.

In-office whitening

Performed at the clinic, with a dual blue-red spectrum lamp that optimizes the process.

  • application of a gel with 36% carbamide peroxide and 9% hydrogen peroxide, which also contains potassium nitrate, a desensitizing agent, and xylitol, which hydrates the teeth
  • a fast treatment: results are obtained in under an hour
  • a kit is provided to continue the treatment at home and obtain optimal results

At-home whitening

  • custom-made trays
  • a kit including a whitening gel with 22% carbamide peroxide
  • trays worn overnight or two hours a day, over a maximum period of two weeks

When to seek care

When the shade of your teeth bothers you and you want to know what is realistic in your case.

The prior visit is not a formality: it checks that there is no decay or gum problem to treat first, and it establishes what whitening can change. Some situations are not suited to it, and the assessment is what determines that.

How the treatment works

A complete dental exam and a cleaning always come before the treatment.

Then comes the choice between in-office whitening, done at the clinic, and at-home whitening with custom-made trays. Both are described above; the professional guides you toward the one that suits your situation and your goal.

After the treatment

Passing sensitivity is common and generally settles within a few days.

Strongly staining food and drink — coffee, tea, red wine, dark sauces — are worth limiting in the first days, while the enamel is more receptive. Remember that crowns, bridges and veneers do not change shade: if you have any, their colour stays as it was.

Teeth yellowed or stained by coffee, tea or time? Teeth whitening at the dentist lightens the shade of natural teeth well beyond what toothpastes and drugstore strips can do, since those act only on surface stains. Two options at our Repentigny clinic: in-chair whitening, with results in under an hour, or at-home whitening with custom-made trays. The gel used contains a desensitiser, and an examination beforehand sets realistic expectations. We also welcome patients from Charlemagne, Le Gardeur and L’Assomption.

    Orthodontics

Orthodontics covers the treatments that correct irregularities of the teeth and jaws in order to improve alignment, and they are suited to every age. The options range from traditional metal appliances to ceramic brackets and clear aligners. The first consultation includes a full examination and a plan suited to your situation.
