Dental exam

A dental exam assesses the condition of the teeth, the gums and the tissues of the mouth. Done regularly, it helps catch a problem at an early stage, before it worsens and calls for a longer procedure. Depending on what it shows, the professional may recommend X-rays or specific follow-up.

Why regular exams matter

Regular dental exams make it possible to spot dental problems or abnormalities in the mouth at an early stage, so they can be treated before they get worse. That is often what prevents longer and more expensive procedures later on.

What happens during the visit

During a routine exam, we ask whether your health has changed since your last visit: new medication, surgery, specific conditions. That information is added to your file, because it can change how a treatment is approached.

Depending on what the exam shows, the professional may recommend X-rays or specific follow-up.

When to seek care

At the interval your dental professional recommends, which is not the same for everyone and depends on the condition of your teeth and gums.

Between visits, it is better to book an appointment as soon as something changes: pain, new sensitivity, gums that bleed when you brush, a tooth that moves, or a spot or sore in the mouth that does not go away. Pain that fades on its own does not mean the cause is gone.

How the treatment works

How long it takes depends on what there is to look at: a routine exam is short, while a first appointment or a particular situation takes longer.

You can ask for explanations as we go, and you can ask for a break. If something is found, we tell you what it is, what it means if it is left alone, and in what order it is best dealt with. Nothing is decided without you understanding why.

After the treatment

You leave with the findings of the visit and, where applicable, a treatment plan and the order in which to carry it out.

If there is nothing to treat, we simply agree on when the next exam should be.

A complete dental exam is the foundation of your oral health. Whether it is for a routine check, a first appointment or an assessment before a treatment, your dentist evaluates the condition of your teeth, your gums and the tissues of the mouth in order to catch any problem at an early stage. Often combined with a dental cleaning, the exam helps avoid longer and more costly procedures later on. Our Repentigny clinic welcomes new patients, including those from Charlemagne, Le Gardeur and L’Assomption.

Prevention and gum health

The care that helps maintain the health of your teeth and your gums over time.

  • An ultrasonic scaler and a mirror clean a patient’s teeth.

    Dental cleaning

Professional dental cleaning, including professional scaling, removes the tartar and plaque that build up despite good daily hygiene. It helps prevent cavities, gingivitis and periodontal disease, while contributing to good oral health. The cleaning also comes with advice suited to your hygiene habits.

  • A retractor holds the mouth open while an instrument works under the gum.

    Root planing and curettage

Root planing and curettage are non-surgical procedures that remove the bacteria and tartar lodged in the periodontal pockets and along the roots of the teeth. The treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic and takes two to four sessions, depending on how severe the problem is and how many teeth are affected.

  • Close-up of the line where the teeth meet the gum.

    Gum grafting

In some patients the gum gradually recedes and exposes the root: this is gum recession. When it comes from an unsuitable brushing technique, simply reviewing that technique can be enough to stop it progressing. When a graft is the chosen option, it involves taking tissue from the palate and grafting it at the affected site.
