Denturology covers removable dental prostheses: complete dentures, partial dentures and dentures retained by implants. A denturologist is part of the team, so a prosthesis can be assessed, adjusted, relined or repaired in the same place as the rest of your care, without being referred elsewhere.
Denturology is the field that designs, makes and fits removable dental prostheses. In Quebec it is practised by denturologists, a profession governed by its own professional order.
At the clinic, that means someone whose trade this is looks after your prosthesis, from the first examination through to adjustments years later.

Types of prosthesis
The choice depends on how many teeth need replacing, on the condition of the mouth, and on what the assessment shows.
a complete denture replaces all the teeth in one jaw
a partial denture replaces a few teeth and rests on the ones that remain
an implant-retained denture is held in place by implants set in the bone
repairs and relines restore a prosthesis you already have
It may be worth booking if a prosthesis moves, rubs, whistles or no longer holds the way it used to, if it is cracked or broken, or if a missing tooth is making chewing difficult.
A prosthesis that is several years old is also worth reviewing even when it is not sore: bone and gums change over time, and the way the prosthesis rests follows those changes. The assessment is what determines what suits your situation.

How the treatment works
The first appointment is for examining the mouth and the current prosthesis, if there is one, and then setting out the options and what each one involves.
Making it takes several appointments: impressions, try-ins and adjustments. How many sessions depends on the type of prosthesis and on what the assessment shows.

After the treatment
A new prosthesis takes some getting used to, and small adjustments over the first few weeks are normal. Do not alter it yourself: a home repair can distort it and leave it unusable.
After that, regular follow-up checks how it rests and how it is wearing. Relines and repairs are done at the clinic, and the care instructions are explained when the prosthesis is handed over.
Denturology deals with removable dental prostheses: the complete denture, the partial denture and the implant-retained denture. A denturologist is part of the team. Assessment, adjustment, relining and repair are done in the same place as the rest of your care.
A denture that no longer holds, that hurts or that is cracked can often be relined or repaired rather than replaced — it is the examination that determines this. Our Repentigny clinic also welcomes patients from Charlemagne, Le Gardeur and L’Assomption.
An extraction may be advised when decay or an infection has destroyed the structure of the tooth or the bone holding it, or when there is not enough room for all the teeth. It is planned after an examination, and the team explains the steps and the instructions to follow afterwards.
A dental implant is an artificial titanium root placed in the jaw to replace the root of a missing tooth; a replacement tooth is then fixed to it. It is one of the available options, alongside bridges and dentures. Planning takes into account general health, the tissues and the situation in the mouth.
