Gum grafting

In some patients the gum gradually recedes and exposes the root: this is gum recession. When it comes from an unsuitable brushing technique, simply reviewing that technique can be enough to stop it progressing. When a graft is the chosen option, it involves taking tissue from the palate and grafting it at the affected site.

Two instruments approach the gum, below the lower teeth.

Gum recession

The gums protect the roots of the teeth. In some patients, part of the gum gradually recedes and exposes the root: this is what is called gum recession.

Recession is sometimes caused by brushing that is too forceful or done incorrectly. In those cases, simply reviewing the technique with the dentist or the hygienist can be enough to stop the problem from progressing.

What the graft involves

When it is the option chosen, the graft involves taking tissue from the patient’s palate and grafting it onto the site of the recession. In some cases, a technique using tissue from a donor bank can be used.

Prevention and gum health

What the graft achieves

  • it strengthens and stabilizes the gum attached to the tooth
  • it protects the tooth against further recession
  • it reduces sensitivity in teeth with recession, to the extent that the root is covered by the new gum tissue
  • depending on the case, it can also restore the appearance of the smile

When to seek care

When the gum pulls back and leaves the root exposed, particularly if the recession advances from one visit to the next, if the tooth becomes sensitive, or if little attached gum is left around it.

A graft is not the first answer in every case: when the recession comes from brushing too hard, correcting the technique is sometimes enough to stop it progressing. The assessment is what tells the difference.

How the treatment works

The procedure is done under local anaesthesia. Tissue is taken from the palate, or comes from a donor bank depending on the technique chosen, then placed over the site to be covered and held with sutures.

After the treatment

The grafted area is not brushed until the clinic says so: it is the most important instruction of the first few days, because the graft has to stay in place to take.

Soft, rather cold food is more comfortable at first. Avoid pulling on your lip to look at the site. The sutures are removed at the follow-up appointment.

A gum graft treats receding gums: when the gum pulls back and exposes the root, the tooth becomes sensitive to cold and looks longer. The graft covers the root with tissue taken from the palate or from a donor bank, to protect the tooth and reduce sensitivity. It is not always necessary: when the recession comes from brushing too hard, correcting the technique can be enough. It is the assessment, at our Repentigny clinic, that determines this. We also welcome patients from Charlemagne, Le Gardeur and L’Assomption.

Prevention and gum health

The care that helps maintain the health of your teeth and your gums over time.

  • An exam under way: the dentist’s mirror and probe move over the upper teeth.

    Dental exam

A dental exam assesses the condition of the teeth, the gums and the tissues of the mouth. Done regularly, it helps catch a problem at an early stage, before it worsens and calls for a longer procedure. Depending on what it shows, the professional may recommend X-rays or specific follow-up.

  • An ultrasonic scaler and a mirror clean a patient’s teeth.

    Dental cleaning

Professional dental cleaning, including professional scaling, removes the tartar and plaque that build up despite good daily hygiene. It helps prevent cavities, gingivitis and periodontal disease, while contributing to good oral health. The cleaning also comes with advice suited to your hygiene habits.

  • A retractor holds the mouth open while an instrument works under the gum.

    Root planing and curettage

Root planing and curettage are non-surgical procedures that remove the bacteria and tartar lodged in the periodontal pockets and along the roots of the teeth. The treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic and takes two to four sessions, depending on how severe the problem is and how many teeth are affected.
